A little TLC can go a long way when it comes to your appliances, especially your washing machine. It’s one of the easiest ways to ensure that your clothes will always come out clean and fresh. Also, it may prevent the need for you to replace your machine or some of its parts too often. To keep your washing machine marching on, follow our tips on washing machine maintenance.

  • Always use the correct detergent. Low end detergents produce more suds, which eventually form a layer of gunk on your washing machine’s drum and become a breeding ground for mould.

  • Always follow the instructions on the detergent packaging and use the correct amount for your load.

  • Remove finished loads from the washing machine immediately. Wet clothing left in the drum can cause clothing to smell or mildew to form.

  • When not in use, leave the door of your washing machine slightly ajar. This will improve circulation in the machine.

  • Clean the fabric and other debris out of your machine’s rubber door seals regularly with a mixture of vinegar and water.

  • Clean out the drain of the washing machine every few weeks. It is usually located at the bottom of your machine at the front.

  • Choose the correct spinning cycle for your load size. Smaller loads don’t need a full power spin.

  • Always ensure that your machine is standing on a level surface and that the machine itself is level. Adjust the legs if your washing machine wobbles. These vibrations cause extra wear and tear on your machine and could shorten its lifespan.

  • Give your machine a service. It’s worth getting an expert in every couple of years to do a general check-up on the health of your machine. And if it’s still under warrantee, this service might even be free. Check with your manufacturer.
