Sunlight’s guide to getting rid of stubborn stains
Whether it’s a red wine spill or lipstick smear, a stubborn stain can quickly turn your favourite items into a serious eyesore. But if you act quickly enough and use the correct cleaning method on your stain, you’re sure to salvage your garments. We’ve looked at the most popular spills and put together this handy guide to getting rid of stubborn stains.
Type of stain – Red wine
Avoid a permanent stain – Dry with a cloth immediately.
Washing method – Stretch the stained part of the garment over a bowl. Cover the stain with salt and pour boiling water over the stain. Wash when complete. If the stain remains, treat with diluted vinegar, rinse and wash.
Type of stain – Blood
Avoid a permanent stain – Dab with a wet cloth immediately.
Washing method – Fresh blood stains should be soaked in cold water, then machine washed. Items with dried blood stains should be soaked in warm water first and then washed.
Type of stain – Coffee
Avoid a permanent stain – Act as soon as possible.
Washing method – Soak in cold water. Pretreat the stain with a stain remover or detergent and then wash.
Type of stain – Grass
Avoid a permanent stain – Treat as soon as possible.
Washing method – Pretreat the stain with laundry detergent and then wash in the warmest water safe for the fabric.
Type of stain – Lipstick
Avoid a permanent stain – Treat as soon as you have access to treatment ingredients.
Washing method – Do not use water. Rub mineral oil onto the stain and leave to set for 15 minutes. Dab with a dry cloth to get rid of excess. Mix one part ammonia with two parts water and dab the area with a sponge. Rinse thoroughly.
