Tips for washing baby clothes

Here are tips to keep in mind when you're washing baby clothes

As a new parent, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed by everything you should or shouldn’t do when it comes to your baby. A concern most parents have is whether they’re washing their baby’s clothes the right way. Here’s laundry advice to help you know the dos and don’ts of washing your baby’s clothes:

Dos:

  • Wash newborn baby clothes before you dress your baby in them. This is because newborns have sensitive skin and doing this removes irritants or dusts that got on the clothes while they were in storage. You can place your little one’s clothes in a mesh bag, and then into the machine. This will help to protect them from getting tangled and damaged in the machine.

  • Read the directions on a garment’s label.

  • Run a test with a washing powder, by washing one or two items of your baby’s clothes and let them wear it them. If your little one’s skin doesn’t have an allergic reaction, then the detergent is safe to use.

  • Wash any stained clothes while the stains are still fresh. Rub the Sunlight green bar soap into the stains and let the clothes soak for 15-20 minutes before washing and rinsing them. It is suitable for delicate fabrics, stains, collars and cuffs, it’s also mild and gentle for all skin types.

  • Keep a separate basket for your baby’s clothes.

Don’ts:

  • Use hot water to wash your baby’s clothes.

  • Wash dark and light clothes together.

  • Put washing powder directly on clothes. Place laundry in first, then water and add laundry detergent as the final step.

  • Over the machine. If your machine is overloaded, then there won’t be much room for your baby’s clothes to move around. This can result in some clothes not being as clean as they should be.

  • Leave your baby’s clothes in the sun for too long. This can fade the colour of your baby’s clothes.

With these tips, knowing how to wash your baby’s clothes will be the least of your worries as a new parent.
